The Shiner Comanches found out just how elusive that third out can be. But they also found out that the game isn't over until that final out.
The Comanches had to come back in the first game against the Thorndale Bulldogs at Leroy Dreyer Field in Brenham to take a 6-5 win.
The Bulldogs scored all their runs with two cuts in the first and fourth innings. Jeffrey Kiesling had a 2-RBI double in the first inning and Miles Grisham drilled a bases-loaded triple in the fourth.
But that was all the Bulldogs would get as Shiner's Garet Pustka allowed no more hits and struck out four in the final three innings.
Thorndale threatened in the fifth and sixth innings, loading the bases in both innings but Pustka worked out of the innings with no more damage.
"Garet had some control problems early but he hung in there and found his groove the last three innings," said Coach Daniel Boedeker.
Russell Boothe put Shiner on the board in the first inning with a solo home run over the center field fence and then drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to score Chris Baer in the fourth inning rally.
Baer, who has had a sensational hitting streak throughout the playoffs, had three hits in the game and scored two runs. Boothe and Pustka had two RBIs each.
"We knew they could hit the ball and I told our kids we would have to play hard the entire game because every inning counted," said Boedeker.
