Bulldogs beat Shiner for 3rd win

SHINER -- The Boling football team equaled the 1987 team that won their first three by claiming a 27-20 victory over Shiner here at Comanche Stadium on Friday night.

Boling broke a scoreless tie with almost 10 minutes gone in the opening quarter when Bulldog quarterback Shawn Jimenez connected with Jared Waddy for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 2:06 left in the quarter. Waddy’s kick was good giving Boling a 7-0 lead.

Shiner came back in the second quarter with a 39 yard touch down pass from R.J. Lester to Todd Wenske with 3:44 left in the half. Lester booted the extra point to tie the score.

With only 1:12 left in the first half, Boling’s Sam Jackson intercepted a Comanche pass and returned the ball 59-yards weaving through traffic and breaking tackles for a touchdown.

The kick failed, leaving Boling with a 13-7 lead.

Boling remembered where to find pay dirt was in the third quarter when Carlton Waddy ran for a 33-yard score with 4:31 left in the quarter. The two point conversion failed, leaving the Bulldogs with a 19-7 edge.

The Comanches got their blood up and came roaring back with a 49-yard touchdown run from Chris Baer with 3:38 left in the third quarter. The missed conversion left the Bulldogs with a 19-13 lead.

Waddy answered the Comanches’ attack by carrying the ball on a 7-yard run for a TD with 8:04 left in the fourth quarter. Cory Ward added a 2-point conversion run to make the score 27-13 Bulldogs.

Lester went on the warpath in the final minutes of the fourth quarter capping a final drive with a 1-yard TD with 3:15 left in the game. The 2-point conversion left Boling with a 27-20 lead as time finally ran out to end the game.

Boling finished the game with 13 first downs to Shiner’s 9. The Bulldogs had 48 rushes for 278 yards and Shiner finished with 28 rushes for 147 yards. Boling completed four of 10 passes for 68 yards, and Shiner completed four of nine passes for 78 yards.

Total offense for the Bulldogs was 346 to Shiner’s 245. Boling lost one of two fumbles while the Comanches lost two of four. Boling punted three times for a total of 60 years and a 20-yard average. Shiner punted once for 40 yards.

The Bulldogs were penalized 15 times for 115 yards and Shiner was penalized six times for 42 yards.
