SCHERTZ -- The Shiner Comanches used a combination of speed and size to run down the Charlotte Trojans, 49-6, Thursday night at Buffalo Stadium in the bi- district round of the Class 1A playoffs.

"We had a good week of practice and our confidence has been building," Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said. "Every game has been tough for us this year. Finally, things are starting to come around for us."

"I felt we did have a little bit of size and speed on Charlotte."

Against Charlotte, Shiner needed under two minutes to open the scoring -- Marlon Wallace busted through the middle for 7 yards to the 43 after the Comanches started at midfield.Wallace, quarterback Wesley Patek and Joey Gamez alternated carries until Patek threw his first pass -- a 9-yard completion to Blaine Caka for the score. Lucian Blaschke added the first of six extra points.

Charlotte had an early penalty which killed most of their first drive. A loss on a rush play dropped the Trojans back to their own 9 and a halfback pass that was complete was negated. Jake Goudea did have a 19-yard run on third and 31 but it was not enough to convert.

The Comanches ran three run plays and had to punt, gaining just eight yards.

Stormee Foulds gained 2 on a third down to convert a first down, the only Charlotte first down of the first half.

On the next drive, Patek hit Evel Jones for 33 yards to the Charlotte 32 and following a little later was a 16-yard run by Patek on the quarterback keeper to the 4. Shiner eventually faced fourth down and one from the 1 and Patek snuck it in for the 14-0 advantage with 10:39 left in the second.

Charlotte punted again and Shiner got a return past the 50. Brady Beal got the ball on the end-around for 15 yards to the 26. THe Comanches had trouble advancing, and Blaschke fell short on a 45-yard field-goal attempt.

Joey Gamez (33) breaks through the line for the Shiner Comanches. Gamez returned a punt 28 yards for a TD and scored on a 7-yard run in the first half.

The Comanches recovered a fumble on the Trojan’s start of the next drive. Beal gained 21 yards to the Charlotte 5 but a holding call took the ball to the 36, and Patek optioned for 29 yards to the 7 and later hit Gamez for the play- action pass to give the Comanches a 21-0 lead.

Soon, Shiner had another short field to work with after stuffing the Trojan offense. Wallace gained 2 to the 35 and Patek went to Jones for a 35-yard strike for another Shiner score.

Later in the quarter, Charlotte still had little success moving the ball and a punt to their own 26 was fielded and ran back by Gamez for a 35-0 Comanche lead at the break.

Charlotte got the second-half kickoff but ran three plays and lost five yards, and Shiner returned the punt to the 12.

Wallace got a gain out to the 2 and then scored on the next play for a 42-0 window.

Later in the quarter, Shiner missed another 40-yard plus field goal and the Trojans drove 64 yards for a score as they started winning first downs.

Goudea lofted a halfback pass for Nick Luna who progressed to the 12 of the Comanches after Charlotte has crossed the 50 for the first time on the previous play.

The Trojans tried three halfback passes and one pass that was attempted after a double reverse put the ball back into Victor Duran’s hands. The Trojans made good on just one of these plays and it led to a score as Duran threw for Isaac Santos in the end zone, and he made the catch after a Shiner defender tipped the ball in an attempt to make an interception. Charlotte’s try for two was no good.

The Comanches scored once more as Kris Patek, the third player to take snaps for Shiner, scored on a 16-yard option run with 2:02 left in the ball game.

The Comanches (5-6) will take on Johnson City in the area round next Friday in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Seguin's Matador Stadium.
