ROUND ROCK -- Shiner needed fewer than five innings Friday to bring home its second state baseball title in three years, with a 13-3 win over Follett in the Class A championship game.

Scott Shimek, who had a save in Shiner's come-from-behind win in the semifinals against Maud, did not give up an earned run in the complete-game victory. In the fifth inning, the junior fielded the game's final ground ball and tossed it to first.
"I thought, 'Just make a good throw, and we'll be state champs,' " Shimek said. "Winning a state championship and doing it by 10-run rule -- it's more than I could have imagined."
After digging themselves a 2-0 hole in the top of the first, the Comanches jumped on Follett pitchers, scoring three runs in the first inning and five in the second.
Leadoff hitter Chris Baer led the Shiner onslaught, going 3 for 4, driving in four runs and scoring one. Baer, Shiner's centerfielder, was named the game's most valuable player.
