Shiner (9-2) scored 42 first-half points in a 54-14 win over Santa Maria Thursday night ( November 11, 2022 ) at Owl Stadium.
"It was a huge win to start the playoffs," senior Dalton Brooks said. "We scored a lot of points, had no turnovers, clicked on all cylinders although kickoff was a little rough and we have to fix that this next week. I feel like the team played great the whole game."
Brooks led Shiner on the ground with 196 yards and three touchdowns and also had an 18-yard pick six.
"I performed well but I have to keep up it every week," he said."Keep coming back and playing like its the same team every week."
Ryan Peterson threw for two touchdowns, one each to Kyle Muehlstein and Keenan Hailey.
Back ups Rankin Wallace (running back) and Jake Simper (quarterback) each had a rushing touchdown in the second half.
"The kids came out and played with a lot of energy. We were able to jump out to a big lead with early plays by our offense. I liked the way our defense came out and played physical," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "I saw improvement in our tackling which we have been preaching that we have to get better out. We still have to improve at staying sharp with blocks on offense and playing assignments; defensively, we have to keep our pad level down. We let them get underneath us at times. We will continue to work on those things."
The Comanches opened the game with a three-play, 52-yard drive with Brooks carrying the football on all three plays and scoring on a 13-yard run.
Peterson intercepted Chris Ibarra on the next drive and got the ball out to the Cougar 43. He connected with Muehlstein on a 43-yard pass that put the Comanches ahead 13-0 at the 7:23 mark.

Santa Maria got pinned at its own 3 and the drive ended as Brooks intercepted a pass at the Cougar 18 and took it in for a score.
Santa Maria picked up a first down on its next drive but soon was bottled up by the Shiner defense and a intentional-grounding penalty, forcing a punt to its 49.
Peterson then found Hailey for 49 yards through the air and a 28-0 lead with less than 90 seconds in the opening frame.
Another Cougar punt set up Shiner at its 15. Trace Bishop had a 14-yard run to the 29 and two plays later, it was Brooks for 71 just over a minute into the second quarter.
A turnover on downs led to Brooks final score of the night - a 73 yards with 6:43 left in the half.
On the next series, Carson Schuette got Shiner's third pick of the night but the Comanches were unable to move the ball and turned it over downs shortly before halftime.
The Cougars had a 35-yard run by Daniel Martinez on the second play from scrimmage in the third quarter. That silver lining vanished when Jordan Harrison came up with the Comanches' fourth interception.
Schuette directed the second-string offense with the running of Wallace, Caleb Lenhert and Drake Cerny with Wallace finishing things off with a 4-yard run for a 48-0 lead with 2:34 left in in the third.
The Cougars ended the shutout early in the fourth quarter on a 42-yard pass from Ibarra to Esiah M. Garcia to get within 48-7
Shiner answered with another long drive and quarterback Jake Simper scored on a 3-yard run with 4:23 left to play.
The Cougars scored on the last play of the game on a 28-yard connect between Ibarra and Garcia.
Shiner will play Mason in the area round, scheduled for 7:00pm on Friday, November 18 at Hutto Memorial Stadium in Hutto.
